Innovation you can touch.
We develop technology that moves.
Here, creativity and technology combine to form tangible innovation. With passion and precision, we develop functional solutions from ideas – from the first sketch to the production-ready product. We test, tinker and optimise until every detail is right. Together, we create smart technologies that people around the world can use intuitively and that move them every day.
Gerhard shares some insider information.
Tinkering, testing, getting started – that's how our R&D team works.
The R&D team is bursting with ideas – some of them end up in ingenious products, others in the ‘legendary near-fail collection’. Between the tinkering garage, think tank and ideas playground, there's plenty of room for tech nerds, creative detours and lots of coffee. What makes a really good team? Technical expertise, team spirit and the courage to try out a crazy idea every now and then.
The idea.
Think together. Discover new things.
Good ideas rarely come alone. At our company, expertise meets creativity – in workshops, discussions and spontaneous sketches on the whiteboard. Together, we set initial ideas in motion and lay the foundation for genuine innovation.
The mock-up.
A concept becomes tangible.
The first real ‘aha’ moment. Using rapid prototyping, we produce mock-ups, which we then test for feasibility, function and ergonomics. Once the mock-up is on the table, the dialogue begins: between idea, technology and reality. Together, we examine what works – and what we can do better.
User testing.
Focus on the customer.
User testing for mechatronic products combines technical testing with design thinking to create an optimal user experience. Early prototypes and iterative testing enable continuous improvement of operating concepts. User feedback plays a central role in developing both functional and intuitive solutions. Close cooperation between developers and users enables innovative ideas to be implemented in a targeted manner. This results in EAO products that are not only technically mature, but also user-centred in their design.
Product development.
Iterate. Integrate. Optimise.
Product development is now about developing a product that meets customer requirements and complies with a whole host of standards. This is always a challenge that requires us developers to draw on all our resources. Experts say ‘it can't be done’, but we show that ‘it can be done’. Findings from user tests are also incorporated into this phase. Product development requires the interaction of several specialist disciplines: mechanical, electronic and firmware development, as well as project management.
Project management.
Plan. Control. Connect.
Project management in the development of mechatronic products combines various approaches to maximise efficiency and flexibility. The V-model ensures a structured approach by supplementing each development phase with a corresponding test phase. At the same time, agile methods and Kanban enable dynamic adaptation to new requirements by flexibly prioritising and visualising tasks. Promoting close cooperation between mechanics, electronics and firmware development is crucial for the successful implementation of complex mechatronic projects.
Mechanical engineering.
Strong solutions for tough conditions.
Mechanical engineering involves designing components and assemblies that function reliably and durably and are equipped to withstand extreme conditions – including extreme temperatures, vibrations, confined installation situations and fire. CAD design is used to harmonise product functions and characteristics with economical manufacturing processes. FEM simulations also help predictively apply mechanical or thermal loads to the product and optimise it iteratively. With the help of functional samples, decisive characteristics are also tested in practice and further optimised if necessary.
Electronics development.
Intelligent electronics – tested down to the last detail.
The electronics team is tasked with creating electronics in line with the specifications. This involves overcoming a number of challenges, including EMC requirements, very wide operating voltage ranges and tight power budgets. Thanks to modern tools, we are able to put prototypes through their paces in order to identify and eliminate weak points in the product at an early stage.
Firmware development.
Reliable software for smart electronics.
Very few electronic products can do without microcontrollers. The firmware team works closely with the electronics team to develop embedded firmware, write unit tests, and use continuous integration infrastructure to help us monitor the quality of the firmware platform with commit-level precision. Parallel to the product, a library of Python scripts is usually created for automated interaction with the embedded hardware, e.g. for configuration management or stress testing.
Production.
This is where tomorrow's innovations are created.
When prototypes become products, our developers are right in the thick of things. During series production, they actively support production, coordinate processes and ensure that everything runs smoothly. This is how we guarantee quality – right from the start.
The application.
Be proud.
As developers at EAO AG, we are proud that our high-quality buttons ensure reliable operation in trains around the world every day. The combination of precise manufacturing and innovative design enables long lasting and intuitive operation that meets the high demands of public transport. It is great to see how our work contributes to providing millions of passengers with a safe and comfortable journey.
